Canadians

Canadians will have an immigration status, but they often will not have passports, will not have entry visas and may or may not have I-94s. If you are not sure which rules apply, please email the University Payroll Service Center for assistance.

  1. Contact your Campus International Office (Urbana 217-333-1303, UIC 312-996-3121, UIS 217-206-6678) regarding restrictions.
  2. Allowed only if payment meets the accountable plan criteria.
  3. Payments normally limited to University of Illinois host department. Contact your Campus International Office (UIC 312-996-3121, UIS 217-206-6678, UIUC 217-333-8226 or 217-333-1303) if another unit wishes to pay.
  4. Full-time employment only.
  5. Any payment that exceeds the University of Illinois per diem rate is considered salary, and is therefore taxable income. If the amount paid exceeds the University of Illinois per diem rate, two Foreign National Payment Forms must be submitted: one for the Illinois per diem rate and the second for the taxable income payment.
  6. Allowed only if it is the University of Illinois per diem or another rate deemed reasonable for expenses only. Contact the University Payroll Service Center: Chicago 312-996-7200 (Phone Number requires dialing all 10-digits), Urbana 217-265-6363, Springfield 217-206-7144 before using non-University of Illinois per diem rates.
  7. Tenure-track position not allowed for J1 Research Scholars or for Professors.
  8. The royalty, prize or award must not be paid for the provision of present service to the University in the United States. Taxes will still need to be paid. If asked, recipients will need to be able to explain to USCIS that the payment of a royalty, prize or award was not a wage paid in exchange for present services. In the case of a royalty, the payment must be based on past authorized provision of service.
