12.2.6 Keep Property Secure

Policy Statement

Employees must take reasonable care to minimize loss of and damage to university property, regardless of the cost of the property or whether it is recorded in Banner Fixed Assets.

If you are unclear on the best way to keep your unit's property secure, contact your university police.

Procedure

To keep property secure:

  • Avoid leaving offices or laboratories unlocked while unattended.
  • Lock small and valuable equipment in cabinets and drawers when not in use.
  • Record manufacturer's serial numbers and a description in unit records even if the equipment is not in Banner Fixed Assets.
  • Secure by bolting or other means any typewriters, personal computers, and other portable equipment, to discourage thefts.
  • Promptly report any unlocatable or stolen equipment to your university police and to University Property Accounting and Reporting.
